Omi Island, Nagato šŸ–šŸ•šŸ¶

Who had the great idea of camping at the end of summer??? Oh yeah that was me. The temperature was cooling down slightly and the humidity was lower so I imagined that camping would be warm but pleasant. Well, when the weekend came it was hot and humid; so hot that Luna was sweating most of the night. Needless to say, if she did not sleep, neither did I. We had to cut our trip short because I do not play nice with others with no sleep. Also, I could not have Luna try to sleep while hot another night in the tent. Now that you know not to go camping during the summer in Japan, let us talk about how beautiful this place is.

Omi Island is a gorgeous place located in Nagato, along the west coast of Japan (~2.5 hrs from base, ~ Ā„2500 for tolls each way). We stayed at the Omijima camp village, a nature preserve with clear waters, diving, and hiking on site. The campsite has great amenities, including a large kitchen with several sinks and single burner stoves (which saved the day because I forgot to bring propane!šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø). Reservations can be made on the website (http://www.omijima2020.com/) and although the receptionists do not speak English, they will use Google translate to make sure you understand all the rules and will show you where things are located. Dogs are allowed, but must be on leash at all times. There are also a couple of cats in the premises, plan accordingly.

The beach itself is composed of black rocks, so I would advise to bring water shoes. Overcast days will be better for dogs as the rocks get really hot. The water is very clear and you can see small fish swim by. šŸ šŸŸšŸ” From the beach you can take the Oumijima Nature Path which overlooks the rocky coastlines and takes you through one of Yamaguchi's Sightseeing spots. We are looking forward to coming back when the temperature is more camp-friendly. I hope you can make it there too. Happy trails with tails!
